Cong slams MSP hike, accuses Modi govt of betraying farmers

New Delhi, May 29 (UNI) The Congress on Thursday disputed government’s announcement of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Kharif crops and accused the Modi government of “cheating” the farmers under the name of offering cost plus 50 percent profit.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC office here, Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala called the Minimum Support Price as “Maximum Suffering for Producers”.

“Farmers in the country are being cheated in the name of cost plus 50% profit. They are shedding tears for the purchase of crops at MSP, while Modi ji is making hollow promises about doubling farmers' income,” he alleged.

Accusing the central government of launching a stealthy attack on farmers and agriculture, Surjewala said, “MSP has turned into Maximum Suffering for Producers. The promise of implementing C2+50% and Swaminathan's recommendation, has now become nothing more than a hollow slogan—‘Jumla Nath’.”

He further alleged that over the past 11 years, the Modi government has made misleading payments based on the announced support price.

Notably, the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday approved the increase in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for 14 Kharif crops for Marketing Season 2025-26.

Citing the Agriculture Ministry data for 2023-24, Surjewala claimed "The Modi government does not buy any crop at MSP except wheat and paddy. The government is only making announcements of MSP, but in reality it is not buying anything".

The senior Congress leader also accused the Prime Minister of ignoring the report of Parliament's Standing Committee on Agriculture, which had recommended enacting a law to guarantee MSP and removing taxes on agriculture and farming. UNI RBE SSP
