CPI(M)'s Baby meets Kejriwal, discusses Election Commission row and ED action against Pinarayi Vijayan

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary M A Baby on Sunday met Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at his residence in New Delhi and discussed the Enforcement Directorate’s actions against CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, former Kerala Chief Minister and present Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly Pinarayi Vijayan, as well as the controversy surrounding the functioning of the Election Commission of India.
The meeting came amid intensified efforts by opposition parties to coordinate their response to concerns over the Election Commission and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Baby and Kejriwal also discussed developments following an Indian Express report on differences within the poll panel over several decisions linked to the SIR exercise.
The report said Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had recorded objections on multiple occasions over decisions and orders relating to the revision process. The Election Commission, however, has maintained that differing views and observations are a normal part of institutional deliberations and that its decisions have legal sanction and follow prescribed procedures.
According to the CPI(M), Baby told Kejriwal that the situation was extraordinary and that the credibility of the Election Commission and Indian democracy was at stake. “The credibility of the Election Commission and Indian democracy is at stake,” Baby said, stressing the need for coordinated action to defend constitutional values and protect citizens’ right to vote.
The CPI(M) leader has been seeking wider opposition coordination on the issue and has reached out to parties both within and outside the INDIA bloc. Opposition parties are also considering a joint response to the Election Commission controversy, with a meeting of INDIA bloc parties proposed in New Delhi on September 30.
Baby also invited Kejriwal to participate in protest meetings being organised by the Left Democratic Front in Kerala against what the CPI(M) describes as the misuse of central investigative agencies and attempts to undermine the federal structure. The CPI(M) has been opposing the Enforcement Directorate’s proceedings involving Vijayan and has described the action as politically motivated, while the agency’s proceedings remain subject to the applicable legal process.
The meeting assumes significance as opposition parties seek to build a broader platform around issues concerning electoral integrity, constitutional institutions, federalism and the alleged misuse of central agencies. Baby has separately been in touch with leaders of several opposition parties, including TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, as part of his effort to bring parties together over concerns relating to the Election Commission and the electoral process.
The CPI(M) has called for greater accountability and transparency in the functioning of the Election Commission, while the poll panel has defended its decision-making process and said differences expressed during internal deliberations do not by themselves undermine the institution’s functioning. The discussions between Baby and Kejriwal are part of the wider political mobilisation taking place ahead of the proposed September 30 opposition meeting, where the Election Commission controversy and other issues are expected to figure prominently.
