L Murugan resigns as MoS, wants to return to grassroots politics in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan resigned from the union Council of Ministers today and sought to relinquish his Rajya Sabha membership, citing his desire to return to grassroots politics and strengthen the BJP in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
In a letter dated October 13 addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Murugan requested that he be relieved of his ministerial responsibilities and permitted to give up his membership of the Upper House to devote himself full-time to party work across the state.
“I want to go to every village and every street, meet our people, stand beside our karyakartas and help expand the party's presence in every part of the State,” he wrote.
Sharing the letter on X, Murugan described his tenure in the union government as the greatest privilege of his life, highlighting his journey from a humble family background to the Council of Ministers.
“From the son of daily wage labourers to serving in the union Council of Ministers under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji has been the greatest privilege of my life,” he posted.
“It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve Bharat Mata and Tamil Nadu under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji,” he added.
Murugan said Modi’s recent visit to Tamil Nadu had reinforced his resolve to work for the state, the BJP and the country. He said the public response during the visit had strengthened his belief that the party could make further gains in Tamil Nadu.
“I wish to devote my full time and energy to preparing the party for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, working towards another term under your leadership, this time with a landslide contribution of seats from Tamil Nadu,” he said in the letter.
Reiterating his commitment to grassroots workers, Murugan wrote in his X post, “Now, I wish to return to the grassroots, stand with our karyakartas and dedicate myself full-time to strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.”
He signed off with the slogan: “Nation First. Party Next. Self Last.”
Recalling his nearly three decades in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the BJP, Murugan said his guiding principle had remained “Nation First, Party Next, Self Last”. He also expressed gratitude to Modi for entrusting him with responsibilities in the union government.
Murugan has served as a Rajya Sabha member twice and held responsibilities across the Information and Broadcasting, Parliamentary Affairs, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry portfolios. Before joining the union Council of Ministers, he served as vice-chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and as Tamil Nadu BJP president.
His request comes amid speculation about a possible union Cabinet reshuffle. union ministers George Kurian and Ravneet Singh Bittu had also reportedly resigned from the Cabinet in June and July, respectively. UNI PWS SS
