PM Modi pays tribute to Saratchandra Chattopadhyay on 150th Birth Anniversary

New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to celebrated Bengali writer and literary giant Saratchandra Chattopadhyay on his 150th birth anniversary, lauding his enduring contribution to Indian literature and his perceptive portrayal of 19th-century Indian society, particularly rural Bengal.
In a post on X, Modi said, “Homage to noted Bengali writer, the versatile Saratchandra Chattopadhyay on his 150th birth anniversary.”
The Prime Minister highlighted the wide reach of Chattopadhyay’s literary works, noting that they have been translated into every Indian language as well as several foreign languages. He said the writings continued to be remembered for their accurate depiction of 19th-century India, especially Bengali society in rural areas.

He also drew attention to Chattopadhyay’s engagement with issues of social reform, women’s rights and nationalism, describing these dimensions of his literary and social outlook as “equally noteworthy”.

Urging younger generations to discover the writer’s works, the Prime Minister said, “I call upon more youngsters to read his writings in the times to come.”
Chattopadhyay, among the most influential Bengali writers of the modern era, is renowned for his sensitive portrayal of human emotions and his depiction of social inequalities and the lives and struggles of ordinary people. His novels and short stories frequently explored social conventions, gender relations, class divisions and individual freedom, giving his work a lasting place in the wider landscape of Indian literature.
Several of his works have been translated into other Indian languages and adapted for theatre, cinema and television, enabling his literary legacy to reach audiences far beyond Bengal. Modi’s tribute on the writer’s 150th birth anniversary highlighted the continuing relevance of Chattopadhyay’s literary and social concerns and called for his works to be discovered anew by younger readers.
