Cyclonic storm likely over Bay of Bengal by Oct 26, IMD warns of heavy rain in Andhra, Odisha

New Delhi, Oct 24 (UNI) A weather system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 26 and move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast around October 28, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to warn of extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds and possible flooding in several states.
In its weather bulletin issued on Saturday, the IMD said a well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal was likely to develop into a depression later in the day.
The system is expected to intensify into a deep depression on October 25 and further strengthen into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26, it said.
Moving west-northwestwards, the system is likely to reach the west-central Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast around the morning of October 28. The bulletin, however, did not specify the likely landfall location or time.
The IMD has forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh on October 27 and 28. Odisha is likely to receive very heavy rainfall on October 27 and extremely heavy showers on October 28.
Gale-force winds reaching 70-80 kmph, with gusts up to 90 kmph, are likely over the west-central and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal on October 27, posing risks to marine activities.
Chhattisgarh is likely to receive heavy rainfall on October 27, followed by isolated very heavy showers from October 28 to 30. Eastern Madhya Pradesh may also witness heavy rainfall during the period.
The department has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during October 24–26, Kerala and Mahe on October 24–25, and Lakshadweep on October 24.
Rainfall activity is expected to increase across eastern India later in the week, with heavy showers forecast over Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim and parts of the northeastern states.
The IMD warned that intense rainfall and strong winds could damage standing crops, plantations, vulnerable structures, and roads, and disrupt transport, causing waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas.
“People are advised to keep a watch on the weather for worsening conditions and be ready to move to safer places accordingly,” the department said.
It advised residents in vulnerable areas to take appropriate precautions against thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.
Meanwhile, a fresh western disturbance, located over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu, is expected to influence weather conditions across northwest India.
The IMD has forecast isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on October 24.
Similar thunderstorm conditions are likely at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on October 25, while isolated rainfall is also forecast in Punjab.
Parts of Rajasthan may experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds on October 24.
According to the seven-day rainfall forecast, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are expected to experience predominantly dry conditions on October 26 and 27, followed by the possibility of isolated rainfall from October 28 to 30.
The department has also forecast isolated heavy rainfall over eastern Uttar Pradesh on October 29 and 30.
The latest bulletin indicates that while northwest India may witness a brief spell of thunderstorms and light rainfall, the most intense weather activity is expected over the eastern coastal states as the Bay of Bengal system strengthens.
