IMD sounds Orange alert for Delhi as rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds lash Capital; mercury drops to 28.3°C

New Delhi, Oct 15 (UNI) Rain and overcast skies brought a sharp drop in temperatures across Delhi on Thursday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounding an orange alert for thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds reaching 40–50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, during the night. The weather department warned of possible waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic disruptions as another spell of rain was forecast across the capital and adjoining NCR areas.
Delhi's Safdarjung Observatory, the city's principal weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 28.3 degrees Celsius on Thursday, five degrees below the previous day's reading and 4.9 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature stood at 23.3 degrees Celsius, 3.7 degrees above normal. The observatory recorded 15.9 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm.
Rainfall was reported across several parts of the National Capital Region. The Ridge recorded the highest rainfall among the major Delhi stations at 25.2 mm, followed by Lodhi Road at 20 mm, Safdarjung at 15.9 mm, Mayur Vihar at 13 mm and Palam at 11.2 mm. Ghaziabad recorded 31.5 mm, while Gurgaon received 8.5 mm and Noida 6 mm during the afternoon observation period.
The maximum temperature at the Ridge settled at 27.4 degrees Celsius, 6.3 degrees below normal, while Palam recorded 28.1 degrees Celsius, 5.3 degrees below normal. Lodhi Road registered 27.8 degrees Celsius, 5.2 degrees below normal, and Ayanagar recorded 28.4 degrees Celsius, 5.3 degrees below normal. The maximum temperature at Pusa was 29.3 degrees Celsius, while Faridabad recorded 31 degrees Celsius.
The IMD forecast generally cloudy skies with very light to light rain at many places and moderate rain at isolated locations during Thursday night. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely to accompany the spell. The department has cautioned commuters about possible traffic congestion, an increased risk of road accidents and water accumulation on roads, advising them to check traffic updates before setting out and avoid areas prone to waterlogging.
The unsettled weather is expected to continue on Friday, with very light to light rain likely at many places, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning during the early morning hours and up to noon. The maximum temperature is forecast to range between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may settle between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius.
The weather is likely to improve from Saturday, when the maximum temperature is expected to rise to 31–33 degrees Celsius under partly cloudy skies. The IMD has forecast no rain from October 17 through October 21, with mainly clear skies expected from Sunday. Day temperatures are likely to rise to 32–34 degrees Celsius between October 19 and 21, while minimum temperatures are forecast to remain largely between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius.
The department attributed the prevailing conditions to a western disturbance persisting as a cyclonic circulation over north Punjab and adjoining areas, along with an upper-air cyclonic circulation over south Haryana and neighbouring areas. A trough extending from northeast Uttar Pradesh to the east-central Arabian Sea, across east Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, is also persisting.
The IMD said maximum temperatures are unlikely to change significantly over the next two days before rising by 2–3 degrees Celsius thereafter.
The rainfall comes amid a spell of below-normal daytime temperatures across Delhi. The maximum temperatures at most monitoring stations were markedly below normal, while minimum temperatures remained above normal.
