Hamirpur: Under-construction bridge collapses, one worker dead, five injured

Hamirpur (HP), Oct 2 (UNI) A major accident occurred on Friday in Hamirpur district when an under-construction bridge over the Hathli Khad (ravine) suddenly collapsed, killing one worker, while five others were seriously injured.
Six workers were engaged in construction work on the bridge, situated between Cheel Vahal and Masiyana, when it fell approximately 100 feet into the ravine below.
One worker died on the spot, while five others sustained serious injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at Hamirpur Medical College.
According to reports, the bridge under construction was made of iron and was said to be over 100 meters long.
On Friday, while the workers were busy with their tasks, a section of the bridge broke off and fell.
Deshraj, an eyewitness present at the scene, stated that he was cutting grass nearby when he heard the loud sound of the bridge collapsing, followed by the screams of the workers. Local residents worked hard to help extricate the injured from the debris.
Upon receiving news of the accident, teams from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the district administration, and the police rushed to the site.
Hamirpur's Naib Tehsildar, Jagdish Chand, stated that approximately eight workers were present at the site when the section of the bridge collapsed.
The administration immediately intensified rescue operations and transported the injured to the hospital via ambulance.
Arrangements were also made using alternative routes to evacuate people who were stranded on the other side due to the bridge collapse.
Hamirpur SP BalBir Singh said that relief and rescue operations are the top priority for the police and administration.
He said that the deceased worker has been identified as Kamal.
All the affected workers are reported to be natives of Jammu.
The Superintendent of Police (SP) stated that the police are conducting a technical and structural investigation to determine the reasons behind the collapse of such a major bridge.
The sudden collapse of a bridge belonging to a major four-lane project of national importance—such as the Mataur-Shimla highway—points to gross negligence on the part of the construction agency and the concerned department.
The collapse of the bridge within this multi-crore project raises serious questions regarding the quality of construction.
Meanwhile, all relevant departments have initiated an investigation into the matter.
