Haryana intensifies crackdown on child begging in Panchkula, launches coordinated rescue operations

Panchkula, Nov 4 (UNI) Haryana's child rights commission has intensified its drive against child begging in Panchkula, mobilising police and multiple government departments to identify vulnerable children and conduct simultaneous rescue operations across the district.
Several children found begging or living in unsafe conditions were rescued during the first day of the "Bhiksha Nahi, Shiksha" (Education, Not Begging) campaign, officials said on Wednesday.
The children underwent medical examinations before being produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Panchkula, for further proceedings under the law. The commission did not disclose the number of children rescued.
Haryana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairperson Tripti Haripal Sheoran chaired a coordination meeting at the HSVP building in Sector 6 to review the operation and identify locations where children face a heightened risk of begging, exploitation and child labour.
The commission directed officials to constitute separate field teams, ensure police deployment and carry out coordinated operations at identified locations.
"Children should have books in their hands, not begging bowls," Sheoran said, calling for effective intervention to protect children from exploitation and bring them into the education system.
The meeting also reviewed arrangements for medical assistance, legal procedures and follow-up support for rescued children.
Officials from the district administration, police, Special Juvenile Police Unit, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, District Legal Services Authority, Municipal Corporation, health and education departments, Women and Child Development Department, Child Welfare Committee and Labour Department attended the meeting.
Sheoran directed the agencies to maintain close coordination and ensure prompt action wherever children were found begging or living in unsafe circumstances.
