Punjab: CM Mann seeks urgent movement of 21 lakh tonnes of foodgrain ahead of paddy peak

Chandigarh, Oct 2 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has asked the Centre to urgently move six lakh tonnes of rice and 15 lakh tonnes of wheat out of the state, warning that a storage crunch could disrupt paddy procurement as arrivals gather pace.
In a letter to union Food and Public Distribution Minister Pralhad Joshi, Mann sought movement of six lakh tonnes of rice by October 10 and 15 lakh tonnes of wheat during October.
“If these wheat stocks are not moved, as a natural consequence, it will prevent farmers from unloading their produce in mandis while there will not be enough space in the rice mills for storage of paddy,” he said.
According to the Chief Minister, nearly 17 lakh tonnes of wheat procured during the 2026-27 rabi marketing season was still lying in rice mills and mandi yards.
Mann said Punjab had delivered 99.50 lakh tonnes, or 94 per cent, of the 105.64 lakh tonnes of custom-milled rice due from the previous kharif season as of September 29, leaving nearly six lakh tonnes pending.
He said only 8.30 lakh tonnes of rice and 4.30 lakh tonnes of wheat had been moved out of Punjab between September 1 and 29 despite the state seeking faster movement.
“Movement of six LMT rice stocks from 1st October to 10th October is urgently required,” Mann said, adding that peak paddy arrivals were expected around October 10.
