Punjab plans spiritual wellness pilot to aid drug rehabilitation in border districts

Chandigarh, Oct 2 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has given in-principle approval to a pilot programme aimed at adding psychosocial and spiritual support to medical treatment for people battling drug addiction, the state government said today.
The pilot will be launched in Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Fazilka, while Art of Living-based programmes are also proposed at OOAT clinics and central jails in Gurdaspur and Kapurthala.
“De-addiction cannot be confined merely to medical treatment, as it is also a battle involving emotions and willpower,” Mann said after meeting representatives of the Art of Living Foundation.
He said the programme would complement existing clinical treatment, with trained local personnel eventually expected to take over its implementation.
“Our objective is clear: not merely to bring people into treatment, but also to help them remain in treatment and return to a healthy life with self-respect and dignity,” Mann said.
The Chief Minister also asked the foundation to undertake groundwater recharge and conservation pilot projects in Mansa and Sangrur districts.
Mann said canal water utilisation for agriculture had increased from 22 per cent to 88 per cent, while the number of blocks facing critical groundwater stress had declined from 166 in 2022 to 152 in 2026.
