Ahead of Diwali, raids conducted in 38 UP districts, licences of 15 sweet shops suspended

Lucknow, Oct 29 (UNI) With households buying sweets for Diwali, the Uttar Pradesh government has stressed tightening the food safety system to ensure the purity and safe manufacture of food items.

In this context, under the "Shuddh Hi Shubh Hai" campaign of the UP Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA), sweet and namkeen manufacturing establishments were extensively inspected in 38 districts across 17 divisions of the state, excluding Chitrakoot division. During this, serious violations of hygiene and food safety standards came to light in several establishments.
According to departmental figures, under the campaign, 260 establishments were inspected, 303 food samples were collected, 229 improvement notices were issued, and suspension of licenses or registrations of 15 establishments was recommended. In total, 7,660 kg of food items were seized or destroyed during the action. Their estimated value has been put at over Rs 15.40 lakh.
In some establishments, unsafe storage of food items, presence of rats, dirty manufacturing areas, lapses in the personal hygiene of employees, and absence of necessary records were found. One sweet establishment operating without a license was also shut down immediately.
Under the campaign, not just cleanliness but also the quality of food items and regulatory compliance were checked in sweet and namkeen manufacturing establishments. Departmental teams paid special attention to raw materials, prepared sweets, edible oil, food colors, storage arrangements and the personal hygiene of employees.

As demand for sweets rises during Diwali, additional pressure falls on manufacturing and storage arrangements. In such a situation, clean premises, safe raw materials, proper temperature and correct packaging of food items are essential to provide consumers with safe food.
The aim of inspections and corrective action is to ensure businesses operate in line with food safety standards, enforce compliance with rules, and protect consumers' interests.
