Minor detained after climbing MiG-23 during LPU violence, 5 arrested in related cases

Neeraj Bali
Chandigarh, Oct 2 (UNI) Punjab Police have apprehended a minor student of Lovely Professional University (LPU) after identifying him as the person seen standing atop a MiG-23UM aircraft displayed outside the university during recent violence, officials said.
The student, a resident of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, was traced through CCTV footage and apprehended from his home, according to details provided by police. His father is an official at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mandi.
A photograph showing the student standing on the aircraft, with flames visible in the background, had gone viral on social media following the unrest.
LPU Chancellor and BJP Rajya Sabha member Ashok Mittal condemned the incident, saying the MiG-23 and a tank associated with the 1971 war had been displayed to honour the armed forces and inspire young people.
"These symbols are meant to boost the morale of our forces and inspire the youth. Climbing on them in this manner amounted to disrespect," Mittal said.
Police have registered four cases in connection with the violence, including cases relating to a highway blockade, the burning of a police vehicle and vandalism at the university. Five people, including the minor, have so far been apprehended or arrested in the related cases.
Police said CCTV footage helped identify the minor as an LPU student pursuing B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He was subsequently traced to his home in Mandi.
Among the others arrested are James Dahiya of Sonipat, Haryana, Gagandeep alias Kotha and Jasmeet Kumar of Phagwara, and Sahil, a university student from Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir, according to the information provided.
Police alleged that Gagandeep and Jasmeet, who worked as pizza delivery workers, reached the area during the unrest with the intention of stealing. Further investigation into the violence is underway.
