Haryana student, 19, dies by suicide after dispute over birthday messages; police investigate

Chandigarh, Nov 4 (UNI) A 19-year-old Class 12 student was found dead at his home in Haryana's Panipat district on Wednesday, hours after an apparent dispute with his girlfriend over birthday messages, police and family members said.
The student, identified as Lakshya, had exchanged messages with his girlfriend shortly after midnight before sending a series of distressing messages to a female relative, including statements suggesting he intended to end his life, according to his family.
Police said they were examining the circumstances surrounding the death and had received a complaint from the family.
Lakshya, who turned 19 in June, was studying at a private school in Kuldeep Nagar. He lived with his mother and younger brother, Yash, while his father had been working in Saudi Arabia for nearly three years.
According to family members, the student had wished his girlfriend a happy birthday through Snapchat shortly after midnight, triggering an argument over late-night calls and messages.
The girl allegedly contacted a distant female relative of Lakshya and asked her to persuade him not to call or message her after midnight.
The request apparently upset the student, who subsequently exchanged messages with the relative, describing the disagreement and expressing distress, the family said.
"I will go to sleep forever now. I will not harm anyone or let anyone's name be dragged into this," Lakshya wrote in one of the messages, according to a Hindi chat transcript shared by the family.
In another message, he wrote, "We will meet in the next life."
The relative attempted to calm him and urged him to sleep, but the student continued sending messages indicating that he was in distress, according to the account.
Family members said he also sent a photograph that raised concerns for his safety, although the relative was unable to alert his family in time.
His younger brother, Yash, said the family discovered the messages while examining Lakshya's mobile phone on Wednesday morning.
The family became concerned when Lakshya did not respond to repeated attempts to open his bedroom door.
Relatives forced the door open and found him unresponsive. He was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead, family members said.
Police from the Old Industrial Area police station reached the house after receiving information about the incident.
Investigating officer Ramniwas said the body had been sent for a post-mortem examination and subsequently handed over to the family.
"The post-mortem has been conducted and the body handed over to the family. Further action will be taken based on the complaint," Ramniwas said.
Police have not publicly established whether the exchange of messages directly contributed to the death or whether any criminal offence was committed.
The family said it had submitted a complaint seeking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigators are expected to examine the messages and other available evidence to establish the sequence of events before the student's death.
The incident has raised questions about the circumstances in which the student became distressed, although the precise factors leading to his death remain under investigation.
