Haryana: Vij backs CEC, accuses Congress of targeting poll institutions after electoral setbacks

Ambala, Oct 2 (UNI) Haryana Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Anil Vij mounted a sharp attack on the Congress while defending Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid protests demanding his resignation.
Vij said the CEC was performing his mandated role by ensuring that electoral rolls are cleaned of names that do not belong there.
He said the Election Commission has to remove names of people who have died, shifted residence or moved after marriage, and take action where names are found to have been added through alleged manipulation.
“The Chief Election Commissioner is doing what is right. It is his job to delete fake votes created through manipulation,” Vij said.
Turning his fire on the Congress, Vij alleged that the party was questioning electoral institutions because it had repeatedly failed to secure electoral victories.
He accused the opposition of shifting the blame to EVMs and the Election Commission instead of accepting the verdict of voters.
Vij likened the Congress' approach to that of a student who fails an examination and then blames the teacher or the classroom.
He alleged that the party was attacking democratic institutions one after another in an attempt to explain away its electoral defeats.
Vij said the basic principle of democracy was that political parties must accept the people's verdict.
Referring to Congress leader Kumari Selja's remarks, he called them “childish” and claimed that voters in 22 states had rejected opposition parties and expressed confidence in the BJP.
He said political parties that lose elections should accept the mandate and examine their own performance rather than question institutions every time the result goes against them.
The minister also invoked the 1975-76 Emergency in his attack on the Congress. Vij alleged that the period represented an assault on democratic institutions and civil liberties and accused the Congress leadership of wanting to revive what he characterised as an authoritarian style of governance.
Taking aim at Rahul Gandhi, Vij invoked the political legacy of his grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and alleged that the Congress continues to carry that legacy.
Vij further alleged that the Congress wanted to weaken India's democratic system and replace it with what he described as “dictatorship”.
He contrasted this with his assertion that India remains committed to democratic governance and the authority of the electorate.
