Schools shut across south Chhattisgarh as cyclone alert triggers precautions

Raipur, Oct 27 (UNI) Schools in several districts of south Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division will remain closed on October 28th as authorities prepare for heavy rain and strong winds forecast in connection with Cyclone Arnab. Rain and stronger-than-usual winds have already begun affecting parts of the region, with heavier rainfall expected late Tuesday night.
Narayanpur district administration has ordered all government, private, and aided schools to remain closed on October 28. In Bastar district, schools will remain shut on the same day. Dantewada and Kondagaon district administrations have also announced one-day closures.
The state government has put district administrations on alert from October 27 to 29. The decision followed a review meeting on October 26, chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Pingua, where officials discussed arrangements to deal with possible weather-related emergencies. The focus is on Bijapur, Sukma, Dantewada, Bastar and Narayanpur districts, where local administrations have been asked to ensure that people in vulnerable areas can reach safe shelters if conditions worsen.
Relief camps and medical services are being readied. Officials have also been told to make arrangements for pregnant women and other vulnerable residents who may need to be moved to safer locations. Farmers are to receive advisories on protecting crops and livestock, while the safety of children at schools and anganwadi centres remains a priority.
The administration is also preparing for damage to homes and public infrastructure. Revenue and Disaster Management Secretary Shammi Abidi has directed officials to pay particular attention to kutcha houses, evacuation arrangements, electricity poles and telecommunications networks. Fallen trees and hoardings could create additional hazards if winds strengthen.
Health Secretary Amit Kataria and other senior officials attended the review meeting. Disaster-response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have been asked to remain ready for deployment. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to follow instructions issued by district administrations and avoid taking unnecessary risks as the weather develops.
