Telangana govt taking proactive measures to tackle El Niño impact: Ponguleti

Hyderabad, Sep 18 (UNI) Telangana Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy on Friday said the state government was taking proactive measures across all sectors to tackle the possible impact of El Niño and rainfall deficit under the leadership of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.
Participating in a short-duration discussion on El Niño in the Legislative Assembly, Mr Ponguleti said several districts were experiencing significant rainfall deficits. Up to September 10, the deficit ranged from 21 per cent in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri to 46 per cent in Jogulamba Gadwal. He said cloudburst-like rainfall in some mandals, where a month's rain fell within an hour, was reflected in statistics but did not provide meaningful benefit to the public.
He said the Chief Minister had held high-level reviews with agricultural scientists and officials to advise farmers on suitable crops and efficient use of available water. The State Cabinet had also discussed the issue extensively on July 17 and taken measures to mitigate its impact based on local conditions.
The Minister said around 33 lakh agricultural pump sets were operating as farmers depended on borewells to protect crops, resulting in a sharp rise in power consumption. Despite demand touching 19,575 MW on September 9, the government was taking measures to ensure uninterrupted power supply to farmers, he said.
Mr Ponguleti said the government was also preparing long-term plans to ensure adequate fodder and water for livestock. He urged the Centre to extend full cooperation and financial support to Telangana in tackling the impact of El Niño, saying the State Cabinet had already passed a resolution seeking Central assistance.
He appealed for collective efforts beyond political considerations to protect the interests of the people of Telangana during the challenging period.
