Hyderabad Woman Loses Rs 2.20 Crore in Digital Arrest Scam, Police Issue Advisory

Hyderabad, Oct 14 (UNI) A 72-year-old woman from Nampally allegedly lost Rs 2.20 crore after cyber fraudsters posing as CBI officers threatened her with arrest in a purported drug trafficking and money laundering case, prompting Hyderabad City Police to issue a public advisory against digital arrest scams on Wednesday.
According to the advisory issued by Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes and SIT) M. Srinivasulu, the fraudsters contacted the woman through a video call, claimed that a parcel containing illegal drugs had been booked in her name and alleged that a bank account linked to her was involved in money laundering.
They allegedly displayed a fake arrest warrant and coerced her into transferring money to multiple bank accounts under the pretext of security deposits. Police said fraudsters commonly impersonate officials of the police, CBI, Enforcement Directorate, Customs and other government agencies to intimidate victims with fabricated criminal allegations and extort money.
