Daring jailbreak in TN : 3 wardens attacked, 17 inmates flee, 13 recaptured, 9 staff suspended

Chennai, Oct 27 (UNI) In a daring jail break, 17 inmates escaped from Theni District prison at Thekkampatti after attacking three wardens last night, leading to suspension of nine guards, even as Opposition parties, including the DMK, AIADMK and PMK cried hoarse, condemned it and blamed the ruling TVK for its administrative failure alleging yet another incident of deteriorating law and order in the state.
However, in a swift action, 13 of the inmates were recaptured and arrested on Tuesday, while special teams have intensified their search to arrest the four remaining inmates.
This is the first major incident in Tamil Nadu in three decades after a similar incident occurred in 1995. The fresh jail break incident comes close on the heels of escape of two inmates from the high security Puzhal Central prison near here, weeks after Chief Minister Vijay visited the premises, inspected it and reviewed the security arrangements. The two, one of them just a 5-foot tall Nepali, escaped
by scaling the 20ft high prison compound wall . They were however, arrested within two days.
Taking a serious view of the incident after the Opposition squarely blamed the administrative failure of the ruling TVK headed by Chief Miniser Vijay, who holds the Home portfolio, DGP Prisons Sandeep Rai Rathore suspended nine jail staff on duty. He was also the jail today afternoon and reviewed the situation.
