After Theni jail break, yet another incidet, prisoner escorted to Coimbatore jail escapes, political parties slam Vijay regime

Chennai, Oct 31 (UNI) In yet another incident of security breach days after the daring Theni district jail break incident, a prisoner who was escorted to Coimbatore Central prison after judicial remand, escaped from the premises on Friday night, even as Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu flayed the Vijay government, saying such incidents are becoming a routine norm, exposing the security lapse.
The escapee, identified as Raghavan, a native of Annur in Coimbatore district, was arrested in a robbery case and brought to the prison after a court ordered his judicial remand.
The prison has a two-tier security system. When the police personnel removed the handcuffs while escorting him from the first entrance gate to the second, Raghavan suddenly pushed the personnel and fled from the premises.
Police said Raghavan had earlier escaped from custody while being escorted by Karnataka police and was subsequently traced and arrested. He had again escaped from Annur police custody before being caught and produced before the court last evening, when he once again outsmarted the escort police.
The Race Course police have registered a case and launched search operations to trace him. Special teams have been formed, while CCTV footages are being analysed and drones were deployed to trace him.
Four police personnel who were escorting him were placed under suspension for their act of negligence.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over security arrangements in prisons across Tamil Nadu, coming close on the heels of the Great Escape from Theni jail break in which all the 17 escaped prisoners were subsequently recaptured in two days.
Meanwhile, a 61-year-old auto driver arrested in a POCSO case allegedly escaped from police custody at Kolathur area in the city. He was undergoing treatment at a hospital from where he gave the slip to the cops.
Police sources said the accused was thrashed by the parents and family members of the girl for misbehaving with her while taking her to school. As he suffered injuries on his head and back, his son admitted him to Periyar Nagar government hospital from where he escaped early this morning.
In the meantime, acting on a complaint from the gir's parents, the Puzhal all women police station registered a case. Though police have formed special teams to trace him, the press release from the Chennai City Police Commissioner's office did not have any information on whether the police escort was provided to the auto driver at the hospital.
Meanwhile, DMK President M.K.Stalin citing these two incidents, wrote on X "Again and Again...TVK fails".
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami had a dig at the TVK government and sought to know how prisoners were able to flee from prisons so easily.
In a post on X, Palaniswami said prisoner escaping from jails had become a recurring episode under the present government, likening them to a television serial. He said the incident could be added to the list of alleged failures of the government, alongside law and order issues, drug trafficking, rising prices, power cuts and mounting debts.
Pointing out that similar incidents had been reported from prisons in Theni, Puzhal and Salem, he said the authorities had repeatedly promised to strengthen the security apparatus in all the prisons, deploy armed personnel erect watchtowers after every escape.
He noted that Chief Minister Joseph Vijay had issued a statement just hours before the Coimbatore incident, directing prison officials to remain vigilant and warning of strict action against those found negligent. He questioned the effectiveness of such statements when another prisoner managed to give a slip to the cops.
Taking a swipe at the Chief Minister, the AIADMK leader quoted a dialogue from Vijay-starrer "Pokkiri" -- “Only the mouth works; everything else remains as it is” -- to mock what he described as the government's functioning.
He also expressed concern over the possibility of escaped prisoners committing further offences and asked how the public could trust the government to ensure their safety when it was unable to secure its own prisons.
Palaniswami also sought to know when Chief Minister Vijay would put into practice the very advice he had issued to officials, and discharge his responsibilities with the alertness and commitment he expected from others.
PMK President and Rajya Sabha MP Anbumani Ramadoss expressed shock over the Coimbatore jail escape incident and said it was a matter of serious concern over the rise in such incidents. The TVK government, apart from taking steps to soon arrest the escaped prisoner, should strengthen security in the prisons to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
