Telangana Guv participated in World Red Cross and Thalassaemia Day

Hyderabad, May 8 (UNI) Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma graced the special programme commemorating World Red Cross Day and World Thalassaemia Day 2025 as the Chief Guest, held today at the Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, here on Thursday .
In his address, the governor underscored the profound significance of these twin observances, describing them as a call to conscience—urging society to act with compassion, solidarity, and a deep sense of humanity.
He emphasised this year’s theme for World Red Cross Day, “On the Side of Humanity”, and lauded the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Telangana State Branch, for its unwavering humanitarian service since its inception in 1920.
He also stressed the growing need for volunteerism across all sections of society to serve the vulnerable and uphold human dignity.
With a membership of over 45,000 across all 33 districts of Telangana, the IRCS has played a vital role in organising blood donation drives, extending medical and health outreach, supporting orphanages and elder care homes, and providing timely assistance during natural disasters.
The governor appreciated the dedicated efforts of district chairpersons and volunteers who continue to uphold the Red Cross mission even in the remotest parts of the state.
Marking World Thalassaemia Day, the governor paid tribute to the courage and resilience of young thalassaemia warriors, who depend on regular blood transfusions for survival.
He commended the work of Dhatri, an organization that has brought hope to families by promoting awareness and stem cell donation for those suffering from this genetic disorder.
As a gesture of compassion, the governor personally distributed fruits to thalassaemia patients present at the event.
A key highlight of the programme was the formal launch of the Blood Stem Cell Donor Registration drive by the governor, who appealed to the public to come forward and participate in this life-saving initiative.
Responding to the Governor’s call, all eligible staff members of Raj Bhavan, aged between 18 and 50 years, voluntarily gave swab samples and registered themselves as stem cell donors—demonstrating the Raj Bhavan Pariwar’s collective commitment to the cause.
On the occasion, the governor also felicitated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partners for their sustained financial support to the Indian Red Cross Society in delivering healthcare services, disaster relief, and community development.
He acknowledged their collaboration as a vital link between societal needs and transformative humanitarian action.
The programme was attended by M. Dana Kishore, IAS, Principal Secretary to the Governor; the General Secretary and the Treasurer of the IRCS, Telangana State Branch, and chairmen of district branches of the IRCS, officials of the Red Cross and officers of Raj Bhavan.
