TDP holds parleys NDA partners on seat sharing for AP local body polls

Vijayawada, Oct 7 (UNI) Telugu Desam Party Andhra Pradesh State president Palla Srinivasa Rao on Wednesday said discussions are underway with the NDA partners on seat-sharing for the forthcoming local body elections.

He said four rounds of meetings had already been held with the allies and that a broad understanding had been reached on the allocation of seats. He also made it clear that the alliance was working towards securing victory in every seat and giving top priority to coordination among candidates and party cadres.
According to him reservations had emerged as a crucial factor in finalising the seat-sharing arrangement, adding that since the issue concerning 34% reservation for BCs was pending before the Supreme Court, candidates could not be finalised category-wise, including BC and OC categories, he said.

He expressed confidence that clarity would emerge on the reservations following the Supreme Court verdict and that the seat-sharing process would be finalised immediately thereafter, stating that a clear picture was likely to emerge on the issue within the next two to three days.

“Providing 34% reservation to BCs is the policy of the TDP. While the High Court verdict has caused some disappointment by creating an impediment to the implementation of 34% reservation, the party remained hopeful of a favourable outcome in the Supreme Court,” he asserted.

“If the Supreme Court verdict is favourable, the alliance will proceed with 34% reservation for BCs. If such reservation is not legally feasible, the TDP will take steps at the party level to ensure 34% representation for BCs. The NDA alliance partners are also committed at the party level to ensuring 34% representation for BCs,” he announced.

Rao accused the YSR Congress Party of adopting a double standard on BC reservations and alleged that while the party was organising BC meetings and publicly claiming support for 34% reservation, it was simultaneously approaching courts over the same issue.

He said the TDP was working to identify candidates with a strong understanding of local conditions, a close connection with the people and a sound grasp of development-related issues.
