First edition of PAPEXPO 2025 begins in Hyderabad, highlights sustainability and industry growth

Hyderabad, June 6 (UNI) The inaugural edition of PAPEXPO 2025, a major industry exhibition focusing on the paper and allied sectors, commenced on Friday at the Hitex Exhibition Centre, Madhapur.

Organised by the Paper Foundation—an NGO supported by the Ministry of MSME—the three-day event features over 100 national and international exhibitors and is expected to attract 15,000 visitors.
The organisers also announced the second edition will be held in December 2026.

Speaking at the inaugural, Soumyajit Mukherjee, CMO of Emami Paper Mills, emphasised the significance of the Rs 18,000 crore Indian paper industry, which supports nearly one crore livelihoods.

He noted growth in writing and printing paper driven by education initiatives, while packaging paper—especially kraft and recycled varieties—is booming due to e-commerce. He highlighted rising urban demand for hygiene products, increasing tissue usage, and stressed the need for better waste paper management, protection against cheap imports, and innovation to make India a net exporter of paper products.

M K Goyal, General Secretary of IPPTA, called the event a symbol of ‘Make in India’ and emphasised the need for unified national production data and support for domestic players. He traced the industry’s growth, particularly in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, and criticized misleading campaigns that portray paper as environmentally harmful.

Nataraj, Deputy Director, Indian Institute of Packaging, Hyderabad, echoed similar sentiments, calling the paper show a reflection of indigenous innovation. He emphasised that despite digitalization, packaging and printing paper remain essential, now comprising over 75 per cent of domestic demand.

Earlier, B R Rao, President of the Paper Foundation, outlined its mission to counter misinformation about paper and promote its sustainable use. He clarified that over 80 per cent of paper in India is made from recycled fibre, bagasse, and agricultural residues—not forest wood.
He condemned "greenwashing" by corporate entities and announced a national awareness campaign, including the observance of Paper Day on August 1.
