AP: KIMS ICON doctors give new lease of life to degree student with spinal defect since birth

Visakhapatnam, June 24 (UNI) A 18-year-old degree student, who had been unable to pass urine naturally since birth due to a spinal defect and had developed kidney damage as a result of continuous leakage, has now been given a new life thanks to a rare and complex surgery performed by doctors at KIMS ICON Hospital, Visakhapatnam.
The student is now able to live a normal life, and his kidneys have also been safeguarded, the hospital said in a release here today.
Dr. Kucherlapati Abhiram, Consultant Urologist & Andrologist, Laparoscopic & Reconstructive Surgeon at the hospital, while sharing the details of this extraordinary case, said the student, hailing from a poor farming family, had a congenital defect in his spine known in medical terms as Spinal Myelomeningocele. This condition had damaged his nerves and severely affected the functioning of his urinary bladder. The bladder had become extremely small and contracted, making it impossible for him to urinate voluntarily.
