Minister Komatireddy directs roads and buildings department officials to stay alert during monsoon

Hyderabad, June 18 (UNI) With the arrival of the monsoon season, Telangana Roads, Buildings, and Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy has directed Roads and Buildings Department officials to remain vigilant and take immediate steps to ensure uninterrupted road connectivity across the state.

Holding a review meeting with Roads & Buildings Department officials in Hyderabad today, the Minister emphasised the need for daily field monitoring and close coordination at all administrative levels to tackle issues arising from heavy rains and flooding.

“In view of past experiences, R&B officials must stay fully alert during the rainy season. Officers should be present at district headquarters and conduct real-time inspections in the field. Coordination with Chief Engineers, Superintending Engineers, Executive Engineers, and Field Engineers must be seamless to prevent road disruptions,” Komatireddy stated.

The Minister instructed officials to stock sandbags and cement bags at the Assistant Engineer level for the immediate restoration of flood-affected roads. He also emphasised the importance of taking preventive steps on bridges and culverts, especially near fast-flowing rivers and streams.

“To respond swiftly to any emergency, control rooms must be set up at the district level and connected to the state headquarters,” he added.

Komatireddy reviewed the status of pothole repairs and road patchworks across the state. Citing recent news reports, he sought updates on pending works.

Officials informed him that 1,214 potholes had been identified on state roads, with 2,488 km of roads partially damaged. Of this, 2,186 km had already been repaired, while 302 km were still under restoration. The Minister instructed that all pending patchworks be completed without further delay.

He further directed officials to conduct on-site inspections of culverts, bridges, Road Over Bridges (ROBs), and Road Under Bridges (RUBs) — especially those along riverbanks and high-traffic zones — and submit a detailed report within a week on both under-construction and operational structures.

Raising concerns about damage caused by KG-wheeled tractors, particularly in rural areas during the crop season, Komatireddy urged the department to educate farmers and tractor operators about the precautions needed to protect roads.

Promoting the slogan “Good Roads – Symbols of Development,” the Minister called for awareness campaigns in coordination with Panchayat Raj and Revenue departments, to be implemented from district to village level.

Komatireddy stated that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has placed special emphasis on the Roads and Buildings Department, recognising it as a key driver of Telangana’s infrastructure development.

He announced that a state-level review meeting on the department’s performance would be held soon and instructed officials to be prepared with comprehensive data, an official statement said.
