Karnataka Cane Crisis Deepens: Farmers keep NH-48 blocked for second day

Belagavi, Oct 14 (UNI) Sugarcane farmers in Karnataka continued to block National Highway 48 for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, intensifying their agitation for a cane price of ₹5,500 per tonne after talks with union Ministers Pralhad Joshi and Shivraj Singh Chouhan failed to produce a concrete decision on their demands.
The blockade at Kognoli toll plaza on the Karnataka–Maharashtra border disrupted traffic between the two states, prompting police to advise motorists travelling between Pune, Kolhapur and Karnataka to avoid the highway and take alternative routes.
The continuing protest underscores the widening disconnect between the farmers’ demand for an assured remunerative price and the Centre’s proposal to examine their grievances through a high-level joint committee.
