Karnataka grants statewide powers to KPSC scam SIT

Bengaluru, Oct 30 (UNI) The Karnataka government on Friday notified the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) recruitment scam as a police station, empowering it to investigate the cases across the state and file final reports before competent courts.
The government order, issued on October 30, follows the Karnataka High Court's October 28 direction to make the SIT operational and facilitate the transfer of investigation records from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The notification declares the SIT a police station under Section 2(1)(u) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, with jurisdiction extending across Karnataka.
The move will enable the team to take up two cases, including alleged irregularities in the appointment of sacked KPSC chairman Shivashankarappa S Sahukar's daughters as industrial officers and alleged large-scale malpractices in the recruitment of veterinary doctors.
The order also authorises the investigating officers appointed to the SIT to submit police reports before the competent courts under Section 193 of the BNSS.
The SIT was constituted following the High Court's September 21 directions to investigate cases registered at Bengaluru's Vidhana Soudha Police Station.
On October 28, Justice M Nagaprasanna had criticised the state government for its delay in operationalising the team, despite the Supreme Court upholding the decision to entrust the investigation to a special team.
The court had observed that there was no impediment to notifying the SIT as a police station to facilitate the transfer of records from the CID and urged the government to expedite the process.
The High Court had also directed the government to furnish the petitioners with the proposed names of two replacement members of the SIT, allowing them two days to raise objections. The team's composition is expected to be considered at the next hearing.
The alleged recruitment scam has led to the arrests of former KPSC chairman Shivashankarappa S Sahukar, commission member B V Geetha, former examination controller Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar and alleged middleman Basavaraj Kannale.
The Enforcement Directorate is also probing the case.
With the latest notification, the SIT is now formally empowered to take over the relevant investigation records from the CID, conduct investigations across Karnataka and submit its findings to the competent court.
