Karnataka Cabinet clears renaming of Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South

Bengaluru, May 22 (UNI) In a significant administrative decision, the Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved the renaming of Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South District for all official and governance purposes, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced.
Speaking to reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Shivakumar said the decision was taken after due legal deliberation and aims to bring greater administrative efficiency and development focus to the region.
"Ramanagara district was earlier part of Bengaluru district. While the headquarters will continue to remain in Ramanagara, the district will henceforth be known as Bengaluru South District for all administrative purposes," he said.
The move is expected to integrate the area more closely with the Bengaluru metropolitan region and attract better infrastructure and investment opportunities. The district will cover a stretch ranging from 30 to 80 km , the Deputy Chief Minister added.
Shivakumar, who represents the Kanakapura constituency in Ramanagara, has been a strong proponent of enhanced development initiatives in the region, which is located just south of Bengaluru.

In a related announcement, Shivakumar also lauded Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq for winning the International Booker Prize and said the government had decided to allot her a G-category site in recognition of her achievement.
"We have agreed to give her a G-category site — a quota reserved for sportspersons, ex-military personnel, journalists, winners of state and national awards, lawyers, judges and others — if Banu Mushtaq (Kannada writer who won the International Booker Prize). Congratulations to her," Shivakumar said.
