Siddaramaiah seeks Centre's intervention for mango farmers

Bengaluru, June 13 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, urging immediate intervention to support mango farmers in the state who are reeling under severe financial distress following a steep fall in market prices.
In his letter, Siddaramaiah expressed deep concern over the sharp decline in prices of the Totapuri mango variety, a major horticultural crop in the state. He said the price crash has rendered mango cultivation unviable, leaving farmers unable to recover even basic input costs.
Seeking urgent relief under the Centre’s Price Deficiency Payment (PDP) scheme, the Chief Minister requested the Union Minister to initiate necessary steps to compensate farmers for the gap between the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and prevailing market rates.
He noted that the PDP mechanism would provide much-needed financial protection to affected growers and help stabilise the sector.
"Farmers are facing an unprecedented situation, and unless swift support is extended, thousands of livelihoods will be at stake," Siddaramaiah said in the letter.
In a related development, Siddaramaiah has also written to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, urging him to revoke a ban on the entry of Totapuri mangoes from Karnataka into the Chittoor district.
The Chief Minister termed the move as arbitrary and against the spirit of cooperative federalism, warning that such actions could disrupt inter-state trade and aggravate the plight of farmers.
Calling for coordinated efforts between states and the Centre, Siddaramaiah emphasised the importance of protecting horticultural markets and ensuring farmers receive fair value for their produce.
