Deve Gowda hails Modi, says rivals easing JDS return

Bengaluru, June 15 (UNI) Former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) patriarch HD Deve Gowda on Sunday said that while gaining power remains his party’s objective, it is the failures of the ruling dispensation that are clearing the path for the JD(S)' political resurgence in Karnataka.
"It is our wish to come to power, and our opponents themselves are paving the way for our return," Gowda remarked, taking an indirect dig at the Congress-led state government at a rally. "We don’t need to analyse or comment much — people can see for themselves how the administration is functioning," he added, in an apparent reference to growing dissatisfaction over governance.
Reflecting on the broader national scenario, Gowda said while the Congress and BJP continue to be regarded as national parties, most others, including his own JD(S), operate as regional forces. "Congress today is in power only in three states. Elsewhere, regional parties are active or the BJP is in command," he said.
The veteran leader notably acknowledged the rising stature of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as one of the world’s foremost leaders. "In the last 10 years, under Modi’s leadership, the BJP has firmly established itself as a truly national party," he said, adding, "No political party in the country today has a personality capable of standing against him. We must acknowledge this reality."
Gowda’s comments signal a calibrated shift in tone toward the BJP, with the JD(S) now part of the NDA coalition. The recent inclusion of JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy in the Union Cabinet further underscores the evolving political alignment. "I never asked that Kumaraswamy be made a minister. Yet, he has been entrusted with a significant responsibility. That speaks for itself," Gowda noted.
While firmly upholding the JD(S) party's regional identity, the former Prime Minister appeared to underscore the party’s growing national relevance through its association with the BJP-led NDA at the Centre. "I have subtly conveyed the message that you can all understand, and I would like to conclude my speech here," he remarked, leaving much for political observers to interpret.
Gowda's remarks come amid ongoing discussions around coalition politics and the emerging role of regional parties in national governance.
