Cong MLA Kulkarni surrenders before special court

Bengaluru, June 13 (UNI) Karnataka Congress MLA and Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board chairman Vinay Kulkarni on Friday surrendered before the special court for MPs and MLAs in connection with the 2016 murder of BJP leader Yogesh Gowda.
The development comes after the Supreme Court recently cancelled Kulkarni’s bail, directing him to surrender within a week. Following the directive, Kulkarni presented himself before the court, which subsequently remanded him to the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Yogesh Gowda, then a Zilla Panchayat member, was hacked to death at his gym in Dharwad on June 15, 2016. At the time, Kulkarni was serving as a minister in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government. The killing sparked widespread outrage and political allegations, with the BJP claiming that the murder was intended to suppress its growing influence in the region.
Former chief minister BS Yediyurappa had vowed during his campaign to ensure justice in the case and had transferred the probe to the CBI upon assuming office. Kulkarni was arrested by the agency on November 5, 2020, and spent nine months in prison before securing bail on August 13, 2021.
As part of the bail conditions, the apex court barred Kulkarni from entering Dharwad district. Nevertheless, he contested and won the 2023 Assembly election from Dharwad without setting foot in the constituency, with his campaign managed by his wife and daughter.
The Supreme Court later ordered an expedited trial and examination of witnesses. The CBI alleged that Kulkarni attempted to influence witnesses through inducements and submitted evidence to this effect before the court. The apex court subsequently revoked his bail, citing concerns over witness tampering.
Kulkarni, speaking to reporters earlier, maintained his innocence, stating that “the court will decide based on the evidence” and expressing faith in the judicial process.
Meanwhile, Congress sources have indicated unease within the party over the political fallout of the case.
