Monsoon weakens over Karnataka, to revive after a week: IMD

Bengaluru, Jun 18 (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday predicted a lull in monsoon activity over Karnataka in the coming days, with rainfall expected to significantly decrease across most regions of the state, including Bengaluru.

Speaking to reporters, IMD Scientist and Head of Forecasting Dr N Puviarasan said, "The monsoon activity is currently decreasing, especially over coastal Karnataka. A Yellow Alert for rainfall has been issued for today, but from tomorrow onwards, no weather alerts are in place."

Dr Puviarasan stated that light to moderate rainfall may continue over parts of coastal Karnataka and three adjoining districts, but interior regions will remain largely dry. "The past two to three days have already seen deficient rain over most parts of Karnataka. Only the Western Ghats and adjoining districts have received excess rainfall," he stated.

He also warned of rising temperatures in Bengaluru in the coming days. "Maximum temperature in Bengaluru will gradually increase. Light rain is expected today and tomorrow, but from the day after tomorrow, the weather will turn dry with clear skies and increased sunshine," he noted.

Dr Puviarasan further explained that the monsoon currently is now strengthening over North India. "The monsoon is moving northward towards Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Delhi. Gujarat, in particular, is likely to receive very heavy rainfall soon," he said.

However, he hinted at a possible revival of monsoon activity in Karnataka after a week. "We expect monsoon conditions to return to coastal Karnataka after about seven days," Dr Puviarasan said.
