RTI activist files complaint, blames DyCM for RCB stampede

Bengaluru, June 19 (UNI) An RTI activist TJ Abraham on Thursday alleged that the June 4 stampede during celebrations linked to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was “orchestrated and politically motivated,” resulting in the deaths of 11 people. He named Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar as the prime accused and lodged a formal complaint at Cubbon Park Police Station seeking criminal action.
“This was not an accident. Eleven people were killed in a planned stampede. I have filed a complaint naming DK Shivakumar as the first accused,” Abraham told media shortly after submitting the complaint to the Cubbon Park police.
Abraham alleged that Shivakumar had been in secret negotiations to acquire the RCB franchise. “He offered Rs 8,600 crore, but the deal fell through as the asking price was Rs 17,000 crore. Despite this, he continued to associate himself with RCB and appears publicly with the team’s logo behind him. In what official capacity?” he asked.
The activist questioned the events preceding the tragedy. “On the morning of June 3 — well before the IPL final was played that evening in Ahmedabad — letters were issued to the police, not to seek permission, but merely to inform them that celebrations would take place the next day. How did they know RCB would win? Was the match fixed?” he alleged.
Abraham pointed to a public statement made by Shivakumar on June 3 outside a courtroom, where he reportedly declared that he would personally go to HAL Airport to receive RCB players. “What role does a Deputy CM have in a private cricket team’s victory parade?” he asked.
He demanded an impartial probe into the possibility of match-fixing, misuse of government machinery, and criminal negligence resulting in the stampede.
While police have begun internal inquiries into the crowd management failures, this is the first formal complaint naming a political figure in connection with the incident.
There has been no official response from Shivakumar’s office.
The June 4 stampede occurred during a public gathering in Bengaluru to celebrate RCB’s IPL campaign. Eleven people were killed and several injured in the chaos that ensued.
