Four police officers suspended over lapses in Cheranalloor fatal accident case

Kochi, Oct 27 (UNI) Four police officers attached to the Cheranalloor police station in Kochi were suspended on Tuesday over alleged procedural lapses in handling the fatal road accident involving the 17-year-old son of an Additional District Judge, which claimed the life of a 55-year-old roadside eatery owner.
Those suspended are Circle Inspector Shyamkumar, Station House Officer Vishwajith P S, and civil police officers Manoj K P and Arun Joy. The action followed a preliminary report submitted by Additional Director General of Police P Vijayan, who examined the police response to the case.
The police had initially registered the case under provisions relating to rash driving and causing death by negligence and released the minor on station bail, triggering protests by the victim's family and widespread criticism.
Jayabalakrishnan, a native of Manjali in Ernakulam district who ran a roadside eatery near Chittoor, died after a Mercedes-Benz allegedly driven by the teenager hit his scooter on Container Road at Cheranalloor in the early hours of Sunday.
The victim's family alleged that the police had shown undue leniency towards the accused and demanded action against officers who allegedly mishandled the case. They also alleged that police personnel had forced them to delete photographs and videos recorded on their mobile phones after the teenager was brought to the police station.
Following the controversy, the police invoked Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and transferred the investigation to the District Crime Branch. The police have also initiated legal steps to challenge the bail granted to the juvenile.
ADGP P Vijayan visited the Cheranalloor police station, the accident site and the victim's family on Tuesday to examine the allegations of procedural lapses and preferential treatment. He said the investigation would proceed without discrimination, irrespective of the accused's family background.
The Additional District Judge, who is the registered owner of the car, has also been booked under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act in connection with the minor's use of the vehicle. The Kerala High Court had granted permission for the police to register a case against the judicial officer.
Meanwhile, Justice P V Kunhikrishnan, the portfolio judge for Thrissur district, has recommended the immediate suspension of the judicial officer, citing concerns over his visit to the police station in connection with the case. The recommendation has been referred to the Kerala High Court's administrative authorities for consideration.
The incident has triggered demands for accountability from both the police department and the judiciary, with the victim's family seeking a fair investigation and stringent action against those found responsible.
