MCC Commerce Dept Global Alumni meet celebrates legacy, connections, shared vision for future

Chennai, Sep 19 (UNI) It was a day dedicated to reminiscing memories when Commerce graduates from around the world gathered at the iconic Madras Christian College (MCC) for the Global Alumni meet 2026, sharing their unforgettable days and nostalgic moments, of the Department of Commerce (Aided) at its premises here on Saturday.
The day commenced with a brief thanksgiving service held at the Bishop Heber Chapel, followed by a tree-planting drive at the new building of the Department of Commerce (Aided), presided over by Arun Mammen, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of MRF Limited, who is also an alumnus of the department.
During the inaugural ceremony, Principal and Secretary Dr. P. Wilson addressed the significance of the MCC's relationship with its alumni and highlighted the partnership between MCC and MRF in establishing the MCC-MRF Innovation Park, the first of its kind among Arts and Science colleges in India. This innovative pedagogical approach has resulted in MCC receiving over 45,000
applications for merely 2,000 seats.
Arun Mammen, who is the chief guest, commended the department's progress across multiple domains, including placement rates and career opportunities for students and urged the alumni to serve as a conduit between the corporate sector and academic institutions. He also discussed MRF’s contributions to the department's development.
The Head of the Department, Dr. Vijayakumari Joseph, formally acknowledged her appreciation for the founders and senior professors who contributed to the development of the Department of Commerce over the years.
This was followed by a panel discussion featuring distinguished alumni, faculty members, and students. Throughout the discussion, participants underscored the importance of the relationship between alumni in the business and corporate sectors and current students, helping them prepare to launch their professional careers.
Mr Mathew Mathew (1984-1987), a fellow alumnus, proposed the idea of establishing the Mr Swaminathan Endowment Fund. Mr.Rakesh Stanley (1991-1994), another alumnus, expressed his delight at re-establishing contact and reminisced about the
glorious past.
The Global Alumni Meet concluded with the alumni participating in cultural events and ended with the song “Carry Your Candle",
while holding candles symbolising the unity among the Alumni of the Department of Commerce (Aided).
