Karnataka sugarcane farmers press on with padayatra to Hubballi

Hubballi, Oct 15 (UNI) Refusing to relent despite assurances from the government, sugarcane farmers from north Karnataka continued their padayatra towards Hubballi on Thursday, intensifying pressure on the Centre and the state government to address their long-pending demands on cane prices, sugar pricing and alleged irregularities in sugar mills.
The farmers, who had earlier staged highway blockades in Belagavi district, have shifted their agitation to a march towards the residence of union Food and Public Distribution Minister Pralhad Joshi. They have made it clear that withdrawing the road blockade should not be mistaken for calling off the protest.
The agitation, led by Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene leaders, including state president Chunappa Pujeri and farmer leader Shashikant Padasalagi, centres on what growers describe as inadequate returns for sugarcane cultivation amid rising input costs and concerns over deductions and discrepancies in payments by sugar factories.
