Priyank Kharge repeats call to ban RSS in Karnataka

Bengaluru, July 1 (UNI) Karnataka Minister and senior Congress leader Priyank Kharge todau once again stirred political waters by reiterating his call to ban the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) if the organisation is found disturbing social harmony in the state.
Kharge, the son of All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge, issued the warning via social media, asserting that the state government would act firmly against any organisation that threatens law and order or spreads disharmony.
"The BJP leaders time and again are daring us to ban the RSS. It is not like playing under the rule of the blind for so long. Now just once try to disturb the peace in society, do politics over the dead, or do any unconstitutional activity — then we will show the power of Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution," Kharge wrote on X.
He further alleged that the BJP was provoking the Congress to act against the RSS. "The BJP has been provoking us to ban RSS," he claimed.
This is not the first time Kharge has made such remarks. On May 25, he stated that any organisation, religious, political or social, that spreads "discontent and disharmony" in Karnataka would not be tolerated. "We will tackle them legally and constitutionally — be it Bajrang Dal, PFI or any other organisation. We will not hesitate to ban them if they pose a threat to law and order," he had said.
Kharge has also indicated that the Congress government would consider rolling back the hijab ban and review any legislation that he described as "unconstitutional or against the interest of the people."
However, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara distanced the government from Kharge's comments, clarifying that no official discussion has taken place regarding a ban on the RSS.
"These were personal views or responses to media queries. There is no government-level decision to ban the RSS," Parameshwara stated.
The Congress party's manifesto for the recent Karnataka Assembly elections promised decisive action against individuals and organisations that spread communal hatred, particularly those based on caste and religion.
Kharge’s remarks have reignited the political debate around the role and legality of ideological organisations in Karnataka, where the Congress recently returned to power. UNI BDN SSP
