Cong accuses RSS of subverting Constitution

Bengaluru, June 28 (UNI) The Congress today launched a scathing attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing it of working to undermine the Constitution and stoke societal divisions, while calling on the Narendra Modi government and its allies to clarify their stand on RSS leader Dattatreya Hosabale’s comments.
At a press conference held at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office on Queens Road, senior Congress leaders — including HM Revanna, VS Ugrappa, and Prakash Rathod, condemned Hosabale’s remarks and questioned the RSS commitment to democratic values.
Former MP VS Ugrappa delivered the most searing critique, declaring that the RSS had no role in India’s freedom struggle or in drafting the Constitution.
“Their politics is mere showmanship. They still operate on the ideology of Golwalkar’s Bunch of Thoughts. RSS has never planned anything for the nation. They never even recite the national anthem — for them, it’s always *Namaste Vatsale,” he said.
Ugrappa said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on Hosabale’s remarks was telling and demanded a response. “Hosabale was in jail with me during the Emergency. He remained silent then. Why speak now? Why didn’t he speak during Vajpayee’s rule or over the past 10 years of BJP government?” he asked.
Calling it an “undeclared emergency,” Ugrappa accused the Modi government of misusing agencies like the ED, CBI, and Income Tax Department to suppress political dissent. He argued that the BJP was raking up the Emergency to deflect from its own failures.
“The per capita income rose from ₹700 to ₹1.5 lakh due to Congress policies. Modi has borrowed ₹132 lakh crore — where has that money gone? Whose poverty has been eradicated?” he asked, demanding transparency on economic outcomes.
Guarantee Committee Chairman HM Revanna said the RSS had always opposed the Constitution and was trying to revive a caste-based social order.
“We strongly condemn Hosabale’s statement. RSS never accepted the Constitution and never hoisted the national flag for decades. We will take this issue to every village. BJP allies like Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu must clarify their stance,” Revanna said.
He accused the RSS of sowing division in society since 1952 and targeting Dalits, minorities, and backward communities. “Do they want a united India or are they trying to reimpose Manusmriti?” he asked.
Former MLC Prakash Rathod questioned the RSS’s right to speak about the Constitution. “They never respected the Constitution and now behave as if they came to power to dismantle it. Their attacks on leaders like Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Mahatma Gandhi are part of a deliberate misinformation campaign,” he said.
Rathod also condemned the BJP's stance on removing the terms ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’ from the Constitution. “If they object to those words, it shows they never honoured the Constitution in the first place,” he said.
The Congress leaders further accused the Modi government of harming India’s global reputation through a weakened foreign policy and urged it to refrain from divisive rhetoric that threatens national unity.
They also demanded that the Lok Sabha Speaker initiate proceedings against Hosabale for his "insult to Parliament" and register a case in accordance with constitutional provisions.
