REPEAT MS50 with correction in headline
Bengaluru, Oct 27 (UNI) BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance-backed AP Ranganath on Tuesday won the Bengaluru Teachers' constituency in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections, defeating Congress candidate Puttanna by 908 votes, while BJP candidate SV Sankanur widened his lead over Congress rival Mohan Limbikai in the West Graduates' constituency.
Ranganath secured 10,810 first-preference votes against Puttanna's 9,902, according to reports, marking a change in representation in the Bengaluru Teachers' constituency.
In West Graduates', Sankanur polled 12,613 first-preference votes against Limbikai's 9,057, establishing a lead of 3,556 votes after the second round of counting. Around 28,000 votes had been counted by then, with the counting process expected to continue until around 0200 hours on Wednesday.
The two contests were among four Legislative Council constituencies that went to the polls on October 23. The other seats are South-East Graduates' and North-East Teachers'.
The Congress contested all four constituencies, while the BJP fielded candidates in the two graduates' constituencies and North-East Teachers'. The JD(S) contested Bengaluru Teachers' as part of its electoral understanding with the BJP.
In South-East Graduates', Congress candidate Shashi Hulikunte Mutt faced BJP nominee K M Suresh. In North-East Teachers', Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur contested against sitting BJP MLC Shashil G Namoshi.
Voter turnout was high across the four constituencies. West Graduates' recorded 75.62 per cent polling, followed by South-East Graduates' at 73.58 per cent. North-East Teachers' registered 86.97 per cent, while Bengaluru Teachers' recorded 81.98 per cent.
The Bengaluru contest was significant as Puttanna had switched from the JD(S) to the Congress before the previous Assembly elections. Both Puttanna and Ranganath belong to the Vokkaliga community.
The results are being watched for their implications for the Congress and the BJP-JD(S) alliance in Karnataka, particularly in constituencies representing graduates and teachers.
The final results in South-East Graduates' and North-East Teachers', along with the final outcome in West Graduates', remain to be confirmed.
