BRS leader Sohail accuses Congress govt, AIMIM of ‘failure’ on minority welfare

Hyderabad, Sept 19 (UNI) Senior BRS leader Shaik Abdullah Sohail on Saturday alleged that the Congress government had failed to effectively implement minority welfare schemes and accused AIMIM of not mounting adequate pressure on the government over the issue.
Sohail, reacting to the recently concluded Legislature session, claimed that government figures showed Rs 1,972.17 crore was spent against Rs 5,100.97 crore allocated for minority welfare schemes over two financial years, representing 38.7 per cent of the allocation.
"Nearly two-thirds of the money allocated for minority welfare schemes remained unspent," he said, questioning the implementation of the schemes.
He claimed that the utilisation was lower in the last financial year, with Rs 1,010.63 crore spent against an allocation of Rs 2,844.02 crore, or 35.5 per cent.
Sohail said the figures related to the scheme budget and excluded salaries, establishment expenditure and other non-scheme components of the Minority Welfare Department.
He also alleged that minority welfare allocations were not linked to the community's 14.27 per cent share of Telangana's population.
The BRS leader further raised the issue of pending scholarships and fee reimbursement, saying delays had affected minority students.
The Telangana High Court had earlier this year heard a PIL concerning delayed scholarships and fee reimbursements, with the Minority Welfare Department among the departments brought into the proceedings.
The Telangana government subsequently issued fresh guidelines in June 2026 for tuition fee reimbursement under the DBT system, specifying timelines for releasing funds and providing for auto-renewal of scholarships for eligible students from the 2026-27 academic year.
Sohail alleged that AIMIM legislators had raised issues including fee reimbursement, scholarships and Waqf properties in the Assembly but failed to sustain pressure on the government outside the House.
He questioned AIMIM's response to what he described as the government's failure to utilise minority welfare funds and demanded greater accountability on implementation.
Sohail also raised the issue of Waqf properties, alleging that matters relating to surveys, encroachments and reconciliation of Waqf and revenue records required concrete action.
He demanded that the government publish a scheme-wise statement of minority welfare allocations, releases, expenditure, beneficiaries and pending applications.
