Congress leader accuses Owaisi of dividing opposition votes in UP

Hyderabad, Oct 27 (UNI) Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency Congress in-charge and former DCC president Mohammed Waliullah Sameer on Tuesday accused AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi of diverting Muslim voters from Rahul Gandhi’s nationwide campaign against alleged vote chori by shifting the debate towards community-specific political leadership in Uttar Pradesh.
In a statement, while reacting to Owaisi’s recent speeches in Azamgarh and Rampur, where he urged Muslims to develop their own political leadership instead of depending on Gandhi-Nehru or Yadav leadership, Sameer said protecting voters’ names on electoral rolls should be the immediate priority.
Citing the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election results, he pointed out that AIMIM’s vote tally exceeded the BJP’s victory margin in several constituencies, including Nakur, Kursi, Bijnor, Sultanpur and Aurai. He said this raised questions about the impact of vote division, while acknowledging that AIMIM voters could not automatically be considered supporters of other Opposition parties.
Sameer said AIMIM had every democratic right to contest elections but its electoral strategy should be open to scrutiny ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He also alleged that the party’s approach to vote consolidation differed between Hyderabad and other states.
Emphasising the need for greater Muslim political representation, he said it should strengthen broader democratic alliances rather than lead to political isolation. He urged Owaisi to clarify whether his Uttar Pradesh campaign was aimed at defeating the BJP or expanding AIMIM at the expense of other Opposition parties.
Sameer said protecting electoral rights and preventing alleged irregularities in voter lists should take precedence, arguing that representation would have little meaning if eligible voters were excluded from electoral rolls.
