Shah inaugurates National Turmeric Board in Telangana

Nizamabad (Telangana), June 29 (UNI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad district of Telangana on Sunday, marking a significant step towards supporting turmeric farmers and boosting exports.

On the occasion, he also unveiled the official logo of the board, symbolising a new era of agricultural innovation and global competitiveness for turmeric cultivation in India.

Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to the welfare of turmeric farmers, noting that Nizamabad is regarded as the turmeric capital of the country.

“I feel fortunate to inaugurate the Turmeric Board, which became a reality thanks to the persistent efforts of BJP MPs. Not only was the board granted to Telangana, but a Telangana native has also been appointed as its chairman,” he said.

Shah highlighted turmeric’s global significance, calling it a “divine medicine” with anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer properties.

“Our target is to achieve USD 1 billion in turmeric exports by 2030. Through this board, we will train farmers in modern cultivation techniques and work to improve their incomes through initiatives like the Bharati Cooperative Society,” he added.

Telangana Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageswara Rao expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and MP Dharmapuri Arvind for sanctioning the National Turmeric Board for Nizamabad, a region known for its large-scale turmeric cultivation.

Several dignitaries attended the event, including Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy, Bandi Sanjay, Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, Nizamabad district in-charge Minister Seethakka, National Turmeric Board Chairman Palle Gangareddy, Secretary Bhavani Sri, MP Dharmapuri Arvind, Dr. Laxman, and Urban MLA Dhanpal Suryanarayana Gupta.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the National Turmeric Board will work to ensure that farmers receive maximum value for their turmeric, promote its consumption in international markets, and highlight the medicinal properties of Indian turmeric globally.

The board will focus on meeting global quality and safety standards, facilitate suitable packaging, and provide training and skill development to farmers, especially in harvesting methods that avoid export-related issues. Shah added that research and development will be undertaken to scientifically showcase the health benefits of turmeric to the world.

He noted that Nizamabad, Jagtial, Nirmal, and Kamareddy districts in Telangana are among India’s top turmeric-producing regions. In 2025, turmeric farmers received Rs 18,000 to Rs 19,000 per quintal, and efforts are being made to help them earn an additional Rs 6,000–Rs 7,000 per quintal over the next three years.

Shah also highlighted that during 2023- 24, turmeric was cultivated on 3 lakh hectares of land across India, producing 10.74 lakh tonnes. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has established the National Cooperative Exports Limited to benefit farmers involved in exports and the National Cooperative Organics Limited for those practising organic farming.

Emphasising the government’s commitment to promises, Shah remarked that “Prime Minister Modi has nurtured a culture of fulfilling promises, and the promise made in 2023 has been fulfilled today.”
