OBCs must unite beyond politics for social justice: TPCC Chief Goud

Hyderabad, June 14 (UNI) Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud emphasised the urgent need for unity among the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), stating that the time has come for these communities to rise above political boundaries and assert their rightful share in all sectors of society.

Speaking at the launch of the book “OBC Porubata” at Gandhi Bhavan here on Saturday, Mahesh Kumar Goud pointed out the historical marginalisation of OBCs, who were long treated merely as vote banks. He asserted that today’s OBCs are demanding justice and representation, declaring, “Our share belongs to us.”

The TPCC president hailed the Congress party’s commitment to social justice, citing the Centre’s decision to conduct a caste census as a major political milestone and a direct result of Congress efforts.

He praised Telangana for becoming a national model by implementing the caste-based survey in a transparent and scientific manner under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, despite him being from the OC category.

Goud highlighted that the very concept of the caste survey stemmed from Rahul Gandhi’s vision during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which helped him understand ground realities across India. A detailed presentation on the Telangana caste survey was earlier made to over 450 Congress representatives, including AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi.

Under the Kamareddy Declaration, he said, the Congress government has legislated 42 per cent reservations for OBCs in education, employment, and political representation. He noted that the Congress party has also ensured 68 per cent representation for BCs, SCs, STs, and minorities in its recent cabinet expansion and PCC restructuring in Telangana—another first in the state’s history.

He added that the BJP-led central government, which had previously opposed the caste census, has now announced its intent to conduct one alongside the general census—reflecting the impact of the Congress’s push for equity.

Calling for united action, Goud urged all OBC communities to come together to press for legal backing of the BC Bill and its inclusion in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution. “The movement for the BC Bill must transcend caste divisions and be driven by a collective spirit for equity and justice,” he added.
