Telangana CM Revanth alleges bid to disenfranchise voters, warns Congress will intensify stir

New Delhi/ Hyderabad, Oct 7 (UNI) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday alleged that the union government was attempting to disenfranchise people through the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and warned that the Congress would intensify its agitation and take the fight to Parliament if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar did not resign.
Speaking to the media here after the police action against Congress leaders, Reddy condemned the arrest of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, alleging that the action was aimed at suppressing the Opposition's voice.
The Chief Minister alleged that the SIR exercise was being conducted under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and claimed that discrepancies in the exercise could result in people being deprived of their constitutional right to vote.
He alleged that the government was attempting to create two categories of citizens — those with voting rights and those without — and asserted that no one had the right to take away the voting rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
Recalling the "Simon Go Back" movement during India's freedom struggle, Reddy called for the "GK Go Back" campaign, referring to Gyanesh Kumar, and said the agitation would continue until the CEC resigned.
He said the Congress would take the issue from the streets to Parliament as part of its effort to safeguard the Constitution and democracy.
Reddy also alleged that central agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate, CBI and Income Tax Department had previously been used against political opponents and claimed that the Election Commission was now being used for political purposes.
Condemning the police action against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, he alleged that the government was using the police against Opposition leaders instead of taking action against those responsible for alleged irregularities.
The Chief Minister recalled the farmers' agitation and said that despite the government's earlier stand, it eventually withdrew the farm laws following public pressure.
He asserted that the present agitation would similarly continue until the demand for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation was addressed.
Reddy warned that if the Election Commission-related issue was not resolved, the agitation could escalate further and the demand could extend to the Prime Minister's resignation.
Describing the agitation as a "people's movement" rather than merely a Congress movement, he said the INDIA alliance and the public were participating in the campaign to protect constitutional rights.
He said the people were closely watching the developments and asserted that those responsible for undermining people's rights would ultimately have to face accountability before the electorate.
Reddy urged the Centre to accept the Opposition's demand and remove Gyanesh Kumar from the post of Chief Election Commissioner.
He said Congress workers would remain united and, following the party's directions, intensify the movement to safeguard the Constitution.
