Vellore Oppn DMK Councillor stokes political row over shocking remarks on Karur stampede, police file cases

Chennai, Oct 27 (UNI) A Ward Councillor of the main Opposition DMK in Vellore district has stoked a fresh political controversy
for his remarks referring to the Karur stampede, that snuffed out 41 lives, and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK Founder Vijay, prompting the police to slap four cases against him.
The remarks of DMK Vellore Ward 12 Councillor Teeta Saravanan in front of Puzhal Central prison when arrested former DMK Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was escorted after judicial remand in the Rs.100 crore private school recognition graft case in the intervening hours of yesterday and today, went viral on the social media and was also widely telecast on several private TV news channels.
After slapping four cases against him for his remarks that "Had we finished him (Vijay) at Karur itself, this situation (Anbil arrest) would not have arisen", Saravanan was on the run. Police have formed special team and launched an intensive search to trace him.
Speaking outside Puzhal Central Prison while protesting to condemn the arrest of former School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Saravanan allegedly said that the present political situation might have been different had Vijay been 'finished' in Karur.
The remark, which appeared to refer to the stampede that claimed 41 lives, triggered widespread criticism after the video went viral.
Holding the DMK flag, he also shouted slogans denouncing the TVK government and hailing Anbil Mahesh.
The incident occurred when DMK supporters gathered outside the prison to protest against Anbil Mahesh’s arrest in an alleged private-school approvals scam. The councillor’s reported remarks drew attention to the use of the Karur tragedy in political exchanges, with the incident continuing to be a sensitive issue in Tamil Nadu politics.
Following a complaint, Puzhal police registered a case against Saravanan under four sections, including provisions relating to intimidation and disturbing public peace. Three special teams have been formed to trace him.
Reacting to this, Minister for Electricity, Law and Prisons CTR.Nirmal Kumar sought to know what conspiracy was hatched during the Karur incident by former Ministers V.Senthil Balaji and Anbil Mahesh. Senthilbalaji, who was embroiled in the multi-crore TASMAC scam after the ruling TVK unearthed massive irregularities in the name of Party Funds (an euphemism coined by the government for corruption), was a native of Karur district and was a DMK strongman, while Anbil hailed from the adjoining native Trichy district.
After the Karur stampede, Senthilbalaji who had contested the earlier Assembly polls from his home turf, this time shifted to Coimbatore South and got elected, while Anbil Mahesh lost the April elections from Tiruverumbur seat in Trichy district.
The controversy comes amid escalating tensions between the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the DMK following Anbil Mahesh’s arrest, the first ex-Minister to go behind the bars in a graft case after the TVK government, which stormed to power under the plank of eradicating corruption, started digging into the alleged corruption that took place during the previous DMK regime.
