Yathindra refuses to apologise to Mysuru royal family

Mysuru, Oct 30 (UNI) Karnataka Urban Development Minister and Mysuru district in-charge Yathindra Siddaramaiah has firmly ruled out apologising to the erstwhile Mysuru royal family over his controversial remarks on Mysuru Palace, saying he has committed no wrong and has no plans to hold separate discussions with the family.
Yathindra said Chief Minister DK Shivakumar would take up the matter directly with the royal family, making separate intervention by him unnecessary.
The controversy erupted after royal family member Pramoda Devi Wadiyar expressed displeasure over the conduct of government officials and police during this year's Mysuru Dasara celebrations and suggested changes to the festival arrangements, including the use of the golden howdah during the Jumboo Savari.
Responding to her remarks, Yathindra had maintained that Mysuru Palace and its premises belonged to the government, triggering criticism from the BJP, whose state president Vijayendra Yediyurappa demanded an apology to the royal family.
Rejecting the demand, Yathindra maintained that his remarks had been misinterpreted and were not intended to disrespect the erstwhile royal family. He had also defended his position by referring to the legal provisions governing the Palace.
The minister had said the government was willing to address the concerns raised by Pramoda Devi but maintained that some of her suggestions, including restricting Dasara celebrations to seven days, were not feasible.
He had also asserted that the Jumboo Savari could not be conducted without the golden howdah and that the government paid for its use.
