Telangana Govt to pursue legal action against Banakacherla project: Minister Uttam Reddy

Hyderabad, June 25 (UNI) Telangana Irrigation Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy today announced that the state government will initiate legal proceedings to halt the Godavari–Banakacherla Link irrigation project proposed by Andhra Pradesh, calling it “illegal and detrimental” to Telangana’s interests.

The Minister made the announcement during a high-level review meeting with senior irrigation officials at Jala Saudha. He directed officials to prepare a comprehensive legal strategy to challenge the project and protect the state’s water rights.

The move follows a recent meeting in New Delhi where Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Uttam presented a detailed representation to Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil, urging the Centre not to approve the pre-feasibility report for the Banakacherla project. The Union Minister reportedly assured that no approval had been granted and an Apex Council meeting would be convened soon.

Uttam also announced that a detailed presentation on the Banakacherla project would be held at Praja Bhavan on June 30. He instructed officials to highlight how the project traces back to the previous BRS regime.

The minister revealed that two decorated Army officers, General Harpal Singh and Colonel Parikshit Mehra—experts in tunnel technology—will be inducted into the Telangana Irrigation Department. Singh will serve as Honorary Advisor, while Mehra is expected to join in July.

Reviewing various key infrastructure works, the minister instructed officials to act on the National Dam Safety Authority's recommendations for restoring the damaged Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla barrages. He demanded weekly progress updates and emphasised fast-tracking the work as per the Central Water Commission guidelines.

He also reviewed the Singur Canal and Dindi projects and directed faster land acquisition and formalities. Regarding the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC), Uttam Kumar Reddy called for a LIDAR survey and deployment of advanced technologies, with daily monitoring of progress.

On administrative matters, he assured pending promotions, including for 125 vacant Deputy Executive Engineer posts, would be resolved promptly. He also ordered action on desiltation at key reservoirs like Nagarjuna Sagar and Nizam Sagar and directed the formal notification of Andhra Pradesh regarding desiltation works.

The Minister stated that the Telangana Government would hold weekly reviews and take strict action against any delays, reaffirming the state's commitment to revitalising the irrigation sector and securing the interests of its farmers, an official statement said.
