Govt eases auto permit restrictions within ORR, allows 40,000 new eco-friendly autos in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, June 7 (UNI) In a significant move to improve public transport and curb pollution in Hyderabad, the state government has relaxed restrictions on new auto rickshaw permits within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits.

Minister for Transport and BC Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar announced that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has issued Government Order (GO) No. 263, permitting a limited number of eco-friendly auto rickshaws.

As per the order, 20,000 electric, 10,000 LPG, and 10,000 CNG auto rickshaws will now be allowed to operate within ORR limits. Additionally, permits have been issued for retrofitting 25,000 existing diesel and petrol vehicles to convert them into electric, LPG, or CNG variants.

Minister Ponnam Prabhakar emphasised that this decision aligns with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s vision to reduce air and noise pollution in the city.

“The city’s population is growing rapidly, with new layouts and apartments coming up within ORR. This move will not only enhance public transport but also contribute to a cleaner environment,” he said.

However, the government clarified that no permissions will be granted for new or transferred diesel and petrol auto rickshaws within the ORR area.

The initiative is expected to benefit around 65,000 families by creating new employment opportunities and fostering sustainable urban mobility, an official statement said on Saturday.
