Waterlogging hits Bengaluru after heavy rainfall

Waterlogging hits Bengaluru after heavy rainfall

Bengaluru, May 19 (UNI) Severe waterlogging brought life to a standstill in several parts of Bengaluru following one of the city’s heaviest rainfalls this year, with Sai Layout among the worst affected.
Residents, on Monday, reported inundated homes, soaked household items, and partially submerged vehicles after the area received nearly 40 mm of rain in 24 hours.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru recorded 10.3 mm of rainfall till Monday morning, with wind speeds reaching up to 50 kmph in isolated areas. Heavier spells of rain are expected on May 23, with the week ahead forecast to remain wet and unsettled.

The IMD also issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and 22 other districts in Karnataka, warning of continued rainfall and thunderstorms until May 22. The city is expected to witness cloudy skies and isolated afternoon thunderstorms through May 25, with maximum temperatures ranging between 27°C and 29°C.
Flooded houses in low-lying areas forced families to evacuate, with many blaming clogged drains and civic apathy. Repeated complaints to authorities had gone unheeded, residents claimed.
Newly appointed BBMP Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao conducted field inspections in affected localities including Sai Layout, Manyata Tech Park, Nagawara Junction and Thanisandra. He had to travel by tractor in parts of Sai Layout due to heavy flooding. Rao assured quick remedial action and said plans were being drawn up to widen a railway vent that is obstructing stormwater flow. Residents have requested the construction of a temporary sump to contain rainwater.
Tree branches were brought down by strong winds in several neighbourhoods, further disrupting traffic. Bengaluru Traffic Police have issued advisories listing key waterlogged routes and alternative travel options.
Authorities have urged the public to stay alert, follow weather updates and take precautions as the city grapples with a prolonged spell of monsoon-like conditions.
