Kerala's Left govt provides 12k houses, 6,300 flats to fishermen

Alappuzha, July 1 (UNI) The CPI(M)-led Left Government which came into power in 2016 in Kerala has constructed and handed over 12,000 houses and 6,300 flats to fishermen under the rehabilitation scheme.
Announcing that keys of newly constructed 400 flats will soon be handed over by the Chief Minister, Fisheries Minister Saji Cheriyan said the Left Government has completed the construction of a sea wall at Chellanam at a cost of Rs 344 crore to protect against sea erosion.
The government is continuously working to protect Kerala's coastal areas by building sea walls wherever necessary, he added.
The minister said the government has implemented schemes that offer up to Rs 1 lakh in assistance to children of fishermen who have lost their parents.
This year alone, 26 students secured admission to medical courses through the free entrance coaching provided by the government. In recent years, 90 students from the fishermen community have become doctors.
A large number of students are also pursuing professional courses like engineering, law, and teaching. Those interested in civil services are provided with both training and accommodation through the Civil Service Academy.
Kerala is the only state in India that has sent two students from the fishermen community to Europe for higher studies at government expense, spending Rs 90 lakh for their education.
