P.K. Sreemathy says CPM has tradition of acting against women harassers, irrespective of rank

Kannur, Oct 7 (UNI) CPI(M) senior leader P.K. Sreemathy on Wednesday said the party had a tradition of taking action against those who harassed women, irrespective of their position or status.
In a social media post, Sreemathy said the party had taken action against those who harassed girls and women, even when such persons occupied high positions.
"If there are still people who have forgotten this, it can only be said that adversity has clouded their judgement," she said.
Sreemathy's remarks came amid the controversy surrounding the removal of E.N. Suresh Babu from the post of CPI(M) Palakkad district secretary.
Suresh Babu was removed from the post at an extended district committee meeting and V. Chenthamarakshan was subsequently appointed as the new district secretary.
The leadership change came in the wake of allegations raised by a woman lawyer against Suresh Babu. The woman had allegedly approached the party leadership with a complaint and submitted digital evidence in support of her allegations.
The issue has triggered political controversy, with questions being raised over the reasons for Suresh Babu's removal and the manner in which the party dealt with the allegations.
Sreemathy's statement assumes significance against this backdrop, particularly as the CPI(M) has faced criticism in the past over its handling of complaints involving alleged harassment of women.
